Today, KEPCO will announce whether to raise electricity bills in the fourth quarter of this year (October to December). The industry expects electricity bills to rise "this time."
If I explain more, it's like this.
Electricity bills in the fourth quarter are determined based on fuel costs from June to August, during which major fuels, coal and LNG (liquefied natural gas) prices, rose significantly. Electricity fuel bullets have soared from $100 per ton in May to $180 now, and international oil prices have also risen steadily for a year, exceeding $70.
LNG prices rose sharply from $385 per ton in April this year to $450 in June. As all kinds of fuel costs for electricity generation soar, some predict that KEPCO will raise electricity bills this time.
What you needs to know.
✔ Europe is already experiencing a surge in electricity bills. On the 13th, the UK's electricity wholesale price was 540 pounds (about 880,000 won) per MWh, the highest ever. Considering that the Korea Electric Power Exchange's electricity wholesale price is around 50,000 won to 100,000 won per MWh, it is shocking.
✔ France, Germany, and Belgium also have a market price of 150 to 160 euros (about 210 to 220,000 won) per MWh. In just a month, wholesale electricity prices rose by 160% in the UK and 48% in France. This is because the price of natural gas, the main production material for electricity, has soared.
✔ Urban gas companies such as SK Gas, Seoul Gas, and Busan Gas benefit from the surge in natural gas prices. KEPCO is also expected to reduce its deficit if it raises electricity bills.
